It's no secret that the Raiders need help on defense, and ESPN's Todd McShay and Mel Kiper both have the team going with a defensive player at third overall.
The Oakland Raiders have a lot of needs to address in the 2013 NFL Draft, but chief among them is the defense. The Raiders were middle of the pack when it came to yards allowed, but gave up just under 28 points per game in 2012. They could use help at every level of the defense, so it's no surprise that ESPN's Mel Kiper and Todd McShay both have the Raiders focusing on that side of the ball in their latest mock draft updates.
Kiper has the Raiders selecting Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, who some consider the top overall prospect in the 2013 draft, at third overall:
The Raiders are really compelled to take the best player available. They're desperate for immediate impact, and Lotulelei is one of those players that makes everybody around him better. He demands multiple blockers or he'll collapse the pocket, and his instincts, vision, bust and power effect both the pass and the run. Oakland also has needs at linebacker, wide receiver and cornerback, but outside of maybe Dee Milliner, I don't think the Raiders can match the value of this pick, much less improve on it.
McShay also has Oakland going with defense in the first round, but instead has them selecting Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner, the consensus top cornerback in the draft:
New offensive coordinator Greg Olson brings a power, man-blocking running game to Oakland, which is not a great fit for Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel. Oakland also needs an upgrade along the defensive front, but with Lotulelei and Werner both off the board Milliner make the most sense. He is the most complete cornerback in the 2013 class and would address the team's most glaring weakness.
SB Nation's Dan Kadar released his latest mock draft on Monday, and he has the Raiders selecting Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel, the nearly unanimous top rated offensive tackle in the 2013 draft.
